28) Boum

28) Boum

The current Boum snowfield, located on the northern slope of the peak of the same name, reached an area of 41 hectares during the Little Ice Age, with a headwater width of 900 metres, shared with the Mail Barrat Glacier. In terms of area and headwater width, it ranked as the 14th largest in the Pyrenees. Its morphology, which is more horizontal than longitudinal, relegated it to 31st place in terms of tongue length, reaching 750 m.
Since the mid-20th century, its morphology has been very similar to its current one, sheltered at the base of Pico Boum, which demonstrates the protective importance of this summit’s wall.
Of the nine glaciers on the northern slope of the massif, between the peaks of Mail Barrat and Gran Quayrat, this glacier was the last to be classified as a Helero in 2018. Despite this, the remaining Helero has maintained its characteristic stratified and bevelled glacial ice. After splitting into three larger fragments, it currently persists as a fragmented helero with a total area of approximately 1 hectare, the western fragment being the largest at 0.6 hectares.
