29) Maupás East

29) Maupás East

This extinct glacier is located east of the northern slope of Pico de Maupás (3,109 m). This glacier and its neighbour, Maupás Oeste, should not be confused with Malpás Sur Oriental and 21) Sur Occidental, located on the southern slope of the same peak in the Remuñé Valley.
Maupás East was part of the large joint headwaters of the Mail Barrat and Boum Glaciers during the Little Ice Age, later becoming independent as a small glacier covering 3.6 hectares. As shown by its small moraine complex, it reached a length of about 200 m and a maximum width of 220 m, limits that the ice still reached in the 1980s.
When catalogued as a icefield, it turned out to be more extensive than it appeared, as part of its surface was not visible because it was covered by erosion material that had fallen from the summit ridge. This glacier finally disappeared in 2023.
