The La Paül Glacier, facing northeast, is located at the base of the summit of Pico de los Gemelos (3,176 m) and the ridge that connects it to Pico Norte de Posets.
The 65 hectares it occupied during the Little Ice Age made it the largest glacier in the Posets Massif and the eighth largest in the Pyrenees. It is estimated that it held 42% of the massif’s ice. From its upper end to the lower limit of the tongue, it reached a length of 1,070 m.
The glacier receded at a steady pace. Between 1960 and 2000, the lower limit of its ice tongue receded by only about 50 m. Between 2000 and 2024, the retreat was particularly pronounced. From 2010 onwards, signs of activity began to weaken and almost half of its surface was covered by erosion material. This transformed it into an extensive ice field that has now been reduced to 1.8 ha.
