The absence of a moraine ridge in acceptable conditions of conservation makes it difficult to determine the dimensions reached by the glacier during the Little Ice Age, which is estimated at 16.5 ha, probably reaching a maximum length of 750 m and covering almost 14% of the ice in the massif. Broadly speaking, its development represented only half that of its neighbouring glaciers, 53) Maniportet, 54) Pays Baché and 55) Lac Tourrat.
At the beginning of the 20th century, its morphology already showed signs of significant retreat, and at the beginning of the last quarter of the century, it was a very deteriorated ice field, which, even without very precise data, was considered extinct in 1980.
The former Néouvielle Glacier is one of the most frequently mentioned in guides describing high mountain routes in the massif. Climbing its ‘old snow’ was one of the main attractions of the popular ascent via the normal route of the Pic de Néouvielle during the 20th century.
