54) Pays Baché

The Pays Baché glacier (or Glacier de Badet) covered an area of 30.5 hectares during the Little Ice Age in the cirque located between the ridges running from Pic Badet (3,160 m) to the east and Pic Maubic (3,058 m) to the north, converging with Pic Long (3,192 m). At one time, it accounted for 25% of the ice in the massif. Its 880-metre tongue, the longest in the sector, was bounded by a well-preserved moraine. During the Little Ice Age, it ranked 22nd in terms of size among the Pyrenean glaciers. In the mid-20th century, its tongue was reduced to less than 400 m, although the ice still reached the upper ridge. At the beginning of the 21st century, a single ice field located between the Picos Long and Badet and two fragments of residual ice preserved a small glacial remnant in this moraine environment. The remains of the last glacier were no longer visible in 2024, when it was finally declared extinct.

In 1896, the still very extensive Pays Baché Glacier, 111 years before the previous photograph. (Lucien Briet).

The remains of an autumn snowfall in 2017 make it easy to see the location of the glacier under the protection of the ridge linking the Badet and Long peaks. The left and right marginal moraines are clearly defined. (Jordi Camins).
