During the Little Ice Age, the Southwest Glacier of Monte Perdido reached an area of 4.8 hectares and a length of 380 metres. It is located to the right of the 60) Southwest Corridor of Monte Perdido, ascending along the normal route to the summit from Góriz, in the reception sector, where material slides down from the place popularly known as ‘escupidera’ (spittoon). The Southwest Helero has evolved in a very similar way to the glacier in 60) Northwest Corridor of Monte Perdido. Slightly more protected from solar radiation and better fed by snowfall, it has not yet disappeared. It is often hidden under a snowfield, which has led to doubts about its existence on several occasions. The melting of the snowfield has confirmed that it still retains its Helero structure, with an area of no more than 0.2 ha, but which has hardly decreased in recent years.
