73) Sur Taillón

The Sur Taillón glacier is the only one in the Gavarnie Massif that lies entirely within Aragonese territory, on the Ordesa slope, south of the Falsa Brecha (2,909 m).Nestled at an average altitude of between 2,800 m and 2,850 m, with little slope, it was formed as a glacier during the Little Ice Age, reaching an area of 21 ha. This ranks it 31st in terms of ice coverage. It maintained its shape as a Helero until after the first decade of the 21st century, despite its southern orientation and exposure to the sun. The main cause of its formation and preservation is likely to be a hypothetical and frequent extraordinary oversupply of snow, carried by the north wind. This tends to accumulate on the extensive surface, leeward of the ridge linking Pico Taillón, Falsa Brecha and Pico de Balzillac. It maintained a remarkable thickness of ice until 2002, when signs of deterioration began to appear, with visible fissures and subsidence. The last remnants of ice disappeared completely in 2012. Since then, only a few snowfields remain during the summers, protected by their ancient moraines.
