85) Oriental de Infiernos

The Eastern Glacier of Infiernos was also known as Arnales due to its location at the base of this 3,006-metre-high peak. During the Little Ice Age, its length of 500 m made it the last of the 50 glaciers that equalled or exceeded this length. With a cirque glacier morphology, it reached an area of 8.9 ha, without converging with the Central Glacier of Infiernos.
Between 1982 and 1985, it remained an active glacier, although it soon split into two units that initially shared similar dimensions.
The lower section, which was inactive and therefore classified as a helle, deteriorated rapidly and disappeared in 2012.
The upper part retained its dynamics until 2006, when it was classified as a helero. In 2017, it only retained glacial ice at the upper and eastern end of the cirque. Five years later, it was considered a residual apparatus, practically camouflaged by the surrounding erosion material, and became extinct in 2023.
