47) Barroude

During the Little Ice Age, the Barroude Glacier was the largest glacier in the Munia Massif, covering 16 hectares and reaching a length of 700 metres. This glacier was fed by the accumulation of snow from the Barroude Wall, between the Tromouse and Heid peaks. It remained an active glacier until approximately 2010, with its lower limit at a low altitude (2,400 m). The right-hand marginal moraine, which is large in relation to the current glacier, is crossed by a series of erosion channels (racheln). In recent years, several subsidences in its central sector have allowed access to its interior. Its current area of 3 hectares makes it the largest glacier in the massif, the second largest in the Pyrenees and the eleventh largest in the mountain range among those classified as glaciers and ice fields.
