The three Picos del Infierno (3,082, 3,073 and 3,076 m) and the Arnales Peak (3,006 m), have hosted on their slopes the three main glaciers of the massif, the Eastern, Central and Western glaciers of the Hells.
Another set of peaks formed by the Garmo Negro (3,051 m), Argüalas (3,046 m) and Algas (3,026 m) peaks, now devoid of glacial Glacier, are home to the remains of the Argüalas and Algas rock glaciers.
Among the peaks that do not reach an altitude of three thousand metres, Punta Zarra (2,947 m) and Pico Gaurier (2,918 m) are worth mentioning.
During the Little Ice Age, the four glacieres of this massif had a total area of 45.5 ha, placing the massif in 10th place in terms of glacial ice surface, representing 2% of the ice in the mountain range.
In the years 1982-1985, 4 ice fomations were located, 2 of them classified as glaciers and the remaining 2 as ice fields. At present, only the Central Glacier of Infiernos maintains some activity.
In line with the other massifs, over the last 175 years it is estimated that the extent of glacial ice has been reduced by 93%. At present, it is 3.2 ha, which corresponds to the aforementioned Central Glacier of Infiernos. This places the Macizo de Infiernos in 8th place in terms of glacier ice surface, with almost 2.5% of the glacier ice in the mountain range.
45,5ha
Glacial extension during the Little Ice Age
The Massif de l’Infierno was the tenth largest in the mountain range, containing 2% of the ice in the Pyrenees.
93%
Loss of ice since the Little Ice Age
It has lost 93% of its glacial expanse in 175 years, leaving only 3.2 hectares of ice.
